How does the progesterone only pill work?
Back to biology class! Some types of POP also prevent the ovaries releasing an egg (ie- prevent ovulation). Most people who ovulate do so every month, so these types of POP prevent this and significantly reduce the risk of pregnancy.
Can I take the progesterone only pill if I have risks that make the combined oral contraceptive pill not right for me?
Unlike the COCP, you can take the POP if you're over 35 and you smoke.
Do I need to take the progesterone only pill at the same time every day?
In order for the POP to work properly, you must take it at roughly the same time each day. Please read the instructions in your advice leaflet before you start relying on your POP for contraception.
What counts as a missed pill?
The window for a pill to be counted as being ‘missed’ is shorter with the POP than the COCP. Some traditional POPs have a window of 3 hours only, compared with 12 hours for other POPs (containing the synthetic hormone desogestrel). Check the leaflet inside of your pill to be sure how long the window is for your particular pill.
Does the progesterone only pill protect against STIs?
No, it doesn't. Make sure to protect yourself and use a condom, too. Shop HANX ultra-thin, vegan, biodegradable Condomshere.
Can I breastfeed whilst using the progesterone only pill?
Yes, the progestogen-only pill is safe to use if you're breastfeeding. Small amounts of progestogen can pass into your breast milk, but this is not harmful to your baby and does not affect the way your milk is produced.
