Burning questions?

How do combined oral contraceptive pills work?

Let's go, biology class! The COCP works in a few different ways to prevent pregnancy:

- It prevents the ovaries releasing an egg (aka ovulation) every month, which significantly reduces the chances of pregnancy.

- Causes the mucus around the neck of the womb (the cervix) to thicken, making it harder for sperm to enter the womb and reach an egg to fertilise.

- Thins the lining of the womb (endometrium), meaning if an egg was fertilised, it would have less chance of implanting into the lining of the womb.

Are there any serious side effects of taking the combined oral contraceptive pill?

There is a very low risk of serious side effects including blood clots and cervical cancers, but these are very rare, and this is why we ask you to take a questionnaire which is appraised by our trusted pharmacy partner to ensure your risk is low.

Are there any factors that would make the combined oral contraceptive pill unsuitable for me?

If you are over the age of 35 and smoke, COCPs are not
suitable for you. Other medical conditions that make the COCP unsuitable include:

- a history of blood clots in your leg or lungs
- a previous stroke
- a family history of blood clots (in a close family member under the age of 45)

- heart conditions
- high blood pressure
- severe migraines that have an aura
(sensory disturbances that occur before migraine headache)
- a history of breast cancer

This is why we ask you to fill in the short medical questionnaire before we prescribe any COCP.

Does the combined oral contraceptive pill protect against STIs?

No, you need to use a condom to keep safe and protect yourself from sexually transmitted infections, including chlamydia. Add our ultra-thin, vegan Condoms to your basket here.

Can I breastfeed if I'm on the combined oral contraceptive pill?

The progestogen-only pill is the preferred and safer option to use if you're currently breastfeeding. If you have any questions, have a chat with your GP for more information and advice.

How does the subscription work?

A 3 month supply will be sent out every 80 days - this should leave you with enough buffer time from your previous pack to account for issues with delivery etc. The subscription will run for 4 instances, after which approximately a year will have passed and you will need to renew your prescription by setting up a new subscription.
