Top Tips for Safely Taking Weight Management Medication
If you're new to injectable medication as part of a weight management programme, it's totally normal to feel a little nervous. But many people find that once they understand how to use the pen and get into a rhythm, it becomes second nature.
This guide provides general tips on how injectable weight management treatments are commonly administered, but always follow the instructions given to you by your prescriber, and refer to the official Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) included with your medication.
- Prepare Your Supplies
Gather your injection pen, a new needle, alcohol wipes, and a sharps container before starting.
- Check Your Medication
Ensure your medication is clear and colourless. Don't use if it's discoloured or contains visible particles.
- Attach a New Needle
Always use a fresh needle for each injection. Screw it on securely but don't over-tighten.
- Prime the Pen (If Needed)
For a new pen, prime it according to the instructions included with the medication. This usually involves dialling to a small dose and pressing the button until you see a drop at the needle tip to ensure all air bubbles have been removed.
- Choose Your Injection Site
Rotate between your abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Ensure you use a different injection site every month or so to avoid the injection site becoming irritated or sore. Avoid areas that are bruised, scarred, or tender.
- Clean the Injection Site
Use an alcohol wipe to clean the chosen area and let it dry completely. Gently pinch a fold of skin at the injection site to create a firm surface. Push the needle into the skin at a 90-degree angle. Insert it fully and quickly.
- Inject the Medication
Push the needle into the skin at a 90-degree angle. Insert it fully and quickly. Press and hold the injection button. Hold for 5-6 seconds until you hear or feel a click.
- Remove the Needle
Pull the needle straight out. Release the pinched skin. Immediately place the used needle in your sharps container. Never recap or reuse needles.
- Check the Pen Window
Ensure the dose counter has returned to '0', confirming you've received the full dose.
- Store Properly
Return unused pens to the refrigerator. Pens must be refrigerated between 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C). Never freeze them.
11. Track Your Doses
GLP-1 medications are administered once weekly. Use a calendar or app to track your injections.
