Can You Fly With GLP-1 Medication?
As we all start getting set for the holiday season, or manage to sneak in a last minute city break, the idea of travelling with GLP-1 medications might seem daunting. Forget luggage or liquid limits, you might be wondering if you’re allowed to take GLP-1 medication on a plane. Whether you’re heading off long haul or popping to Paris for the weekend, we’ve pulled together the ultimate guide to travelling safely with Mounjaro (tirzepatide) or Wegovy (semaglutide).
Whilst you can travel abroad with personal medication, it’s always best to check the embassy website for the country you’re travelling to before flying in case of any updates, or specific restrictions.
-
Place your medication in a separate liquid bag for flights
You can take GLP-1 medication through security at the airport, but they may ask to scan it separately. Prep ahead and have your medication already in a clear, separate plastic bag. Bonus: you get more time browsing duty free before your flight rather than getting held up unpacking your whole case. If possible, it’s best to bring the original carton which your injection pens came in so that security can quickly identify the medication.
-
Pack medication in your carry-on luggage
GLP-1 medication is sensitive to light and extreme temperatures. Typically, the cargo holds at the bottom of airplanes aren't usually well-insulated and are more prone to colder temperatures, which can impact your medication. The cabin area of a plane is far more temperature controlled, so aim to pack the medication into your carry-on.
-
Bring a portable cooling case
Contrary to belief, GLP-1 medications can stay unrefrigerated for a certain amount of time as long as the temperature doesn’t go above 30°C. Since it’s not your average medication in pill form, there are a few extra steps to take care of your medication whilst on the road. A portable cooling case, often used for insulin, can be a lifesaver to bring with you when you’re travelling. Think of it as an insulated lunch box for your GLP-1 medication. These cases help keep your medication shielded from the sun and chilled, no matter how flustered you might get navigating baggage claim. They often come with different compartments so that you can pack your injection and needles separately, which is great for keeping organised whilst away!
-
Find a fridge once you arrive at your destination
In order to make sure your medication keeps nice and fresh, one of the first things you should do once you arrive at your destination is put your GLP-1 pen in a fridge. Most hotel rooms or Airbnbs come equipped with a mini-fridge, which is very useful. If the mini fridge comes with a freezer section, make sure you don’t store your medication directly next to the freezer to avoid any chance of it freezing and becoming unusable.
Take care, follow all the above steps and you should have no problem travelling with your GLP-1 medication. Enjoy your holiday!
