HWOM: Michelle Obama

This month we’re honouring Michelle Obama, a formidable force of nature who was named ‘Most Admired Woman of 2018’.

As the first African American woman to serve in the role, Michelle Obama redefined the idea of what it means to be a First Lady. With her grace, strength and compassion, Michelle danced her way into the hearts of her nation and the world.

Here's why we love her...

1. Michelle stood by Barrack’s side during his presidency but never in his shadow. The Obamas have been our OG power couple since they catapulted onto the world stage in 2008 when Barrack was selected as the Democratic Party’s nominee for President. The rest as they say is history; during the Obama’s two terms as America’s first family, Michelle paved the way for a new chapter in White House culture.

2. Having grown up in the notoriously rough and impoverished South Side of Chicago, Michelle has always been proud of and grateful to the area for making her who she is today. Alongside Barrack, Michelle uses her platform and power to push for better education, welfare and resources for the South Side.

Michelle also advocated for healthier lives for all Americans, spear heading campaigns which educated Americans on the benefits of eating fresh unprocessed produce and taking up active hobbies. The focus centred on encouraging Americans to think of healthy habits as a fun and enjoyable element of life.

3. Michelle fought for the the progression of women’s rights in the USA and abroad and has continued to be a feminist activist long after her time in the White House ended. She masterfully shaped the conversation and direction of feminism from her ‘Let The Girls Learn’ initiative in 2016 to her iconic Courage Awards speech: “The women we honour today teach us three very important lessons. One, that as women, we must stand up for ourselves. The second, as women, we must stand up for each other. And finally, as women, we must stand up for justice for all."

Fun FactWhen Michelle met the future president in 1988, he was a summer intern at her law firm and she was his adviser. When he asked her out, she first said no, because she thought it wasn’t appropriate for them to date.

Knowing all of that, it’s no surprise that her thought provoking and enlightening memoir ‘Becoming’ has broken records in the few weeks since it was published in November last year, making it to the top of 2018’s best seller lists around the world with only 6 weeks left of the year. In becoming, Michelle welcomes you into her world sharing the tears, trials and triumphs that led up to her iconic 8 years as First Lady of the United States of America and a global feminist movement.

A revolutionary and our forever Woman Crush Wednesday, Michelle Obama we ❤️ you and can’t wait to see what you do next. (Here’s hoping it’s your own Presidency in 2020 🤞🏾).
