Summer of Love 2021

Summer of Love 2021

It's here. The Summer of Love.

Whether you’re loving yourself or loving someone else, this summer is all about love. It’s about time. We have had enough of being locked down and are in desperate need of human touch and company, including sex.

Humans are hard-wired to need and thrive from touch. That sense of connection is part of our nervous system, our physiology and our psychology. We release hormones such as oxytocin (aka the “love hormone”) when we are touched, triggering the reward centre in our brains. The pandemic has meant we have been deprived of this physical touch from others, and we are oh so ready for intimacy. Enter: The Summer of Love.

Yet, we’re apprehensive.

A recent study by Badoo found that 63% of single people feel nervous at the thought of intimacy and sex after a year of lockdown, and 41% say they are scared because they don’t know their date’s lifestyle choices, and the risk they pose in terms of Covid-19.

Despite our nervousness, we are ready to move quickly, and passionately.

Our very own HANX Coming Out of Lockdown Survey showed that 56% of our 750 respondents expect that coming out of lockdown will have an effect on their sex life, with 56% anticipating more sex as a result. 48% of respondents have also experimented sexually since the beginning of the pandemic, trying their hand at BDSM, sending nudes, exploring ethical porn, trying out sensory deprivation and experimenting with public sex. This may well be something we are keen to play out IRL, as the easing of restrictions allow. As for getting intimate with a new partner, 26% would like to move faster than they did pre-pandemic and 39% won’t change how soon they get it on with a partner. All teeing up nicely for a summer of passion and intimacy.

Let’s talk about it.

Over on our HANX Life forum, our community are opening up about how they feel about this, and thoughts on the ‘Summer of Love.’ How do you feel? Join the conversation here

Post-lockdown sex is not a race, and we shouldn’t feel the pressure to get to it right away.

When it comes to sex, many of us have had an enforced celibacy over the past year and this has made us more than ready to find intimacy again. But this isn’t a race, and our desire to connect and have sex again should be done in a safe way, at your own pace. After coming out of one pandemic, we don’t want to be going straight into another. And by that, we mean a sexual health pandemic. So, from face-masks to condoms, let’s keep things safe this summer with HANX.

HANX’s post-lockdown safe sex top tips…

Here you have it, our 5 things to keep you safe and smiling this Summer of Love:

      1. Have fun. Sex should be fun, and it should be something you and you partner/partners both want and enjoy. Make sure you’re all consenting to sexual activity, you’re not hurting anybody, and you talk to your partner(s) about what you and they want and like. This way we’re all winners! The summer of ’21 will undoubtedly be full of people releasing their pent-up frustrations after our dating and sex lives have been put on hold for a year or more. So, let’s make it good. #goodtimesarecoming
      2. Do what’s right for you. After a long break from sexual intimacy, you may well feel the pressure to get back into things. This isn’t a race, and everyone is different, so listen to your body, communicate with your partner, and do what’s right for you at your own pace.
      3. Carry condoms, ofc. You never know when you might need one, so by having them in your bag *at all times* means you won’t be caught out. One of the most common reason people forget to use a condom is because they don’t have one available and when you’re ‘in the moment,’ this is not something people want to stop to look for. We’ve said it many a time, but we won’t (can’t) stop - condoms are the only form of contraception that protect against unplanned pregnancy as well as protecting against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Always use a condom with a new partner, and until you’ve both/all has a sexual health screen. Whether you’re on the regular or need some for a ‘just in case’ moment, stock up now.
      4. Use a condom. And if you have a condom, this does not always mean you’ll use it… So, the next step is getting into the habit of always using a condom with a new partner. It can be an awkward conversation, but nothing is more awkward than telling your partner you’ve passed on an STI or have an unplanned pregnancy. Our research shows that people are impressed when a partner whips out a condom, as it shows they care about their body and are taking control of their sexual health. This is attractive in a partner, and with a brand like HANX you’re giving off all the right signals. 😉  Check out @My_Hanx TikTok on how to put one on, courtesy of our one and only Dr HANX.
      5. Have regular sexual health check-ups. Many STIs are asymptomatic, meaning they don’t have any symptoms and you may be unknowingly infected and infecting others if you’ve not had a sexual health check-up. We’d recommend at least once a year, or straight away if you know you’ve been in contact with someone who has an STI, you don’t use a condom or a condom breaks, or you are having any symptoms.
