"For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dare to speak the truth to the power of those men. But their time is up." Who else for our January HWOM,than Oprah Winfrey! Happy Birthday OW, we love you for many many reasons...
Here are our top three reasons why our Woman of The Month goes to the legend Winfrey:
1. She is always breaking barriers. Oprah broke 20th century taboos and allowed LGBT people to enter the mainstream, with her tabloid talk show.
2. As the first black woman billionaire in world history, Winfrey is one of the most influential women in the world. She uses this influence admirably, and was instrumental in launching Oxygen Media, dedicated to producing cable programming specifically for women.
3. Winfrey was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom (the nation's highest civilian honour) by President Barack Obama in 2013. Oprah's standing, although powerful, is personable and she is open about personal issues that affect many. Oprah openly discussed her childhood sexual abuse on a special episode of her show focusing on sexual abuse in 1986.
Fun Fact: Winfrey was actually named "Orpah" on her birth certificate after the biblical figure in the Book of Ruth, but people mispronounced it regularly and "Oprah" stuck.
