HWOM: Frida Kahlo

HWOM: Frida Kahlo

Fri, Jul 06, 18 - HANX Official

"Feet, what do I need you for when I have wings to fly?"

Today we are celebrating Frida Kahlo, on what would have been her 111th birthday! Here are our top three reasons the Mexican portrait artist is July’s HWOM:

1. She’s an icon for the feminism movement, and the LGBTQ movement. Kahlo's art expressed insight into the female experience. She refused to be defined by others' her natural unibrow and moustache show self-love and denial of gender roles.

2. Frida was a strong woman. Kahlo once proclaimed, “At the end of the day, we can endure much more than we think we can.”Her painting mainly self-portraits after she was severely injured in a bus accident. The accident meant she needed 35 operations in total and painting became part of her recovery.

3. She produced record-breaking art. In 2016 her 1939 painting Dos desnudos en el bosque (La tierra misma) sold for over $8 million, the highest auction price for work done by a Latin American artist.

Fun Fact: She was born and died in the same house, which is now a museum.
